EVRS Rescues Carly from the Pony Skin Industry

Posted in Fundraising

Beading Divas November/December fundraising partner is Equine Voices Rescue & Sanctuary (EVRS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit equine rescue organization located in Amado, Arizona. EVRS’ mission is to rescue equines from neglect, abuse, abandonment, and slaughter. They rehabilitate, adopt, or provide a safe and loving sanctuary to equines who need a forever home.

Meet Carly, a beautiful, sweet, 19-year-old mare who came from the “Pony Skin” industry, a horrific industry that uses foal skins to manufacture high-end belts, handbags, furniture, and more. These foals are cast-offs of the Premarin Industry, the Racing Industry, and other breeding environments. A pony skin foal is another name for a nurse mare foal who is born to and removed from its mother so she can provide milk to a highly valued thoroughbred foal born for the racetrack or show ring. There is no telling how many foals are produced annually and killed. A lucky few are rescued, some are sold at auction, others are killed on the spot with a bullet or a club. Whether they end up on a dinner plate in Japan, as dog food, or are killed and skinned for high-end leather products, the nurse mare industry is a disgrace. Carly is one of the lucky ones. She lives in the Big herd with Gulliver and other three founding members of the sanctuary, Deuce, Spanky and Bella Luna. Her best friend is Joy, and they spend much of their time together. They are so strikingly similar in coloring that they could be sisters, but they’re not related at all. They both have four white socks, though all of Joy’s go up to her knees. Their manes are different, too: Joy’s is blonder and Carly’s reddish. Joy has a long blonde tail and Carly has an even longer reddish-brown tail. Carly also has a soft blaze and Joy does not.

“BARBIE PARTY” would make the best gift!
