Paws Without Borders Give Valley Fever Dog “Diablo” a Second Chance!

Posted in Fundraising

Our March-April fundraising partner is Paws Without Borders, a 501c3 dog rescue based in Tucson. They rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome abandoned, abused, and neglected dogs throughout the desert southwest and northern Mexico (Sonora). They are completely volunteer based, which means that 100% of every donation goes straight into the care of their animals. Read about one of their rescues, Diablo:

Diablo is a young dog that we pulled from Pima Animal Care Center almost 2 years ago. Diablo was suffering from a very severe case of Valley fever, and had been put on the euthanasia list because his care would require expensive treatment and he was declining in the shelter environment. When a kind of foster stepped in and said that she would be willing to take on his case, we couldn’t say no, and welcomed to Diablo into the Paws Without Borders family!

We took Diablo to the foremost expert on valley fever in the world, who just so happens to have a residency here in Arizona! Diablo started a difficult treatment regimen, and we’ve bolstered his system with lots of immune and gut support along the way. Despite all of our care and his treatment, late in 2025 it was clear that Diablo’s right forelimb, where the valley fever had gotten into the bone, was increasingly painful for him. We made the decision to amputate his limb, so that the infection did not have a chance to spread and would not cause him further pain. To date, Diablo’s care has cost close to $4,000, but it has been worth every penny to see this boy thriving!
“SPRING FORWARD” is one of many cool bracelets available in our Etsy shop!
