Equine Voices’ former Wild Mustang Kenji

Posted in Fundraising

Beading Divas November/December fundraising partner is Equine Voices Rescue & Sanctuary (EVRS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit equine rescue organization located in Amado, Arizona. EVRS’ mission is to rescue equines from neglect, abuse, abandonment, and slaughter. They rehabilitate, adopt, or provide a safe and loving sanctuary to equines who need a forever home. EVRS, an award-winning organization, provides unwanted horses, donkeys, and mules a forever home with all the food, love and care they need to live long, happy lives. Many have been adopted by families looking for their next best friend. But EVRS is always there for the horses who have graced their pastures.

Meet KENJI, a 19-year-old gelding whose name is of Japanese origin and means “strong and vigorous.” He has a strong and noble face to go with his name. Kenji is a very curious horse, but he has trust issues and probably always will. He’s from the Devil’s Garden Plateau herd and was part of a helicopter roundup in Northern California in December 2018. EVRS rescued ten of the Devil’s Garden wild mustangs from this roundup, including several mares.

Roundups of wild mustang are inhumane and unnecessary, particularly for mares. Surgical sterilization done in the field can cost a mare her life. It also costs taxpayers more money. The alternative, Porcine Zona Pellucida, or PZP birth control, is humane and recommended by veterinarians across the country. PZP is a fertility-control vaccine given to female horses on the range through an injection via remote darting. PZP prevents pregnancy in females by stimulating the production of antibodies that bind sperm receptors on the egg’s surface, thereby preventing sperm attachment and fertilization.

You can help EVRS rescue more equines like Kenji by purchasing one-of-a-kind, handcrafted Beading Divas bracelets.
