Sweet Bonnie arrived in March of 2022. She was barely standing and had sores all over her body from lying down all the time. She had been fed the wrong diet of sugars and starches for a donkey. Her diet runied her health and her hooves to the point where quality of life was a concern. We have an amazing veterinarian and wonderful farriers who work diligently to help Bonnie stay upright and moving. Bonnie receives special feedings three times a day and hoof care every 6-8 weeks. She is blanketed in the cold and monitored daily. Our veterinarian researches and networks with other veterinarians, a geneticist, and professors to find ways to improve Bonnie’s life.
Bonnie’s muscles do not hold on to the necessary sugar (energy) to function properly. Her diet now is one we would not normally feed a donkey due to the sugar content, but it seems to work for her and help her live somewhat pain free. We are continuing to look for new ways to improve her life, and we’re so happy she is here with us. Normally a donkey as ill as Bonnie was when she arrived is put down without finding a reason for her illness. Fortunately, we are able to help Bonnie and learn from her care as well. Even with all of her health issues, Bonnie is the sweetest girl and she knows she is loved.
