LaRoy and Jackson are a pair of bonded mini donkeys. (Jackson is missing the tip of an ear from a bite at the breeder’s when he was young.) They arrived at FDHR in 2020 after their owner of 15 years passed away. Her family could not keep these 15 year olds, but did not want them to be adopted out. We promised the family we would keep the boys here at the rescue for the rest of their lives.
Jackson and LaRoy’s owners loved them very much, and sort of over loved them with treats. Both boys came in very overweight. We weigh our donkeys’ hay each day to keep them on the proper diet and amount of hay needed for their size. Being a mini, that means only getting 3 pounds of hay a day. Needless to say, it was a big shock to these two boys that they’re not getting treats every day, all day long.
Four years later, we’re still working on their weight loss. During this time, LaRoy and Jackson have become great ambassadors for the Rescue. They are the perfect size to visit with children, nursing homes, and parades along with other off property events. Part of their exercise includes pack burro racing, where a runner will run along side of the donkey on a trail run event. Jackson is more bonded to LaRoy than LaRoy is bonded to Jackson. If LaRoy is not around Jackson frets. When they do the running/hiking events, LaRoy has to be in the lead.
Jackson and LaRoy’s “rescue” was one of love from their family. They won the lottery, living and having fun with 32 other donkeys on a 30-acre sanctuary doing events and meeting the public. We love them! They are perfect here!
