Beading Divas Bracelets benefit Operation Greyhound for February 2012

Occasionally, Operation Greyhound will involve puppies!

Operation Greyhound received a call from the Agua Caliente Race Track in Mexico that a female (Fontiera) had given birth and asked Operation Greyhound to pick her up along with her puppies.

Immediately Operation Greyhound left for Tijuana but upon arrival, was informed all of the puppies except for one had not survived. Fontiera had been kept in a kennel so small and dark she could hardly turn around. She had accidentally stepped on her puppies.

Operation Greyhound rescued Fontiera and the remaining baby, who was then 10 days old, but upon arrival at the facility noticed that something was wrong with his little back leg. He was immediately taken to the vet and x-rays revealed that one of his leg bones was turned around and would probably need surgery to correct it when he got a little older. The vet felt Fontiera had probably stepped on him also.

The puppy was named Moses, as he was the only survivor. More x-rays were taken a month later and the vet explained what the surgery would entail. Basically he would have to spend his entire puppyhood in leg casts and surgeries going from smaller to bigger as he got older, a nightmare for this poor baby.

Operation Greyhound made the decision to wait since there was no discomfort of any kind. Moses stayed with his mommy for two months and then he was taken in at his foster home with other greyhounds. As his leg grew, the defect was noticed less and at three months Moses was such a bouncy boy, you would never know he had a leg problem.

Moses and his mother all grown up - adopted together

The decision was made with vet approval, that the surgery would only be cosmetic and therefore Operation Greyhound would not put Moses through all that pain and suffering. The foster mommy and daddy adopted Moses.
