Lilly came to Desert Harbor Doberman Rescue of Arizona after she was found as a stray with a large, painful, weeping mass in her ear. Knowing that she was already a senior, and that the mass was likely cancer, they struggled with the decision to do surgery or not. Luckily, they have a team of incredible veterinarians, and a fund dedicated to seniors and medical cases and were able to take an informed risk and do surgery.
The surgery went well, and Lilly finally had relief from her pain. Sadly, while she was under, cancer spotting her lungs was discovered indicating the cancerous mass that had been removed already metastasized.
Because of an incredible support network an angel family asked to adopt Lilly, cancer and all. As if that was not great enough, after healing from surgery, she turned into a peppy puppy. She joins her family on adventures, plays like a youngster with her siblings, and is showing no signs of slowing down. She even crossed the finish line after running with her Dad in the 2019 Dobie Dash 5k! It was a beautiful sight to see.
While Lilly’s case is terminal, DHDR’s medical fund allowed for flexibility in making the right call for a dog who had been failed so many times before. Whether she has another 6 months, or years left, she is finally pain-free, happy, and enjoying life to the fullest.
